About
Originally established in 1974 by the Fort Bend County Commissioners' Court under the Older Americans' Act of 1965, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels (FBS) became a 501(c)(3) organization in 1976. One of Fort Bend County's oldest non-profit organizations, FBS was born out of a grass roots effort by community leaders to fill a growing community need to provide seniors with hot, regular meals. Milestones in the organization's history include becoming a United Way organization in 1981 and assuming the management of the senior program in Waller County in 1990 at the request of the Houston-Galveston Area Council. In 2004, Fort Bend Seniors received official certification by Meals on Wheels Association of America, which ensures that meals provide at least 1/3 of the daily nutritional requirements of seniors.
FBS is the only nonprofit organization in Fort Bend and Waller counties that delivers meals to the homes of seniors. All programs – from home delivered meals to senior activity center activities and transportation – are available to all seniors aged 60 and older at no cost to them, regardless of income level, ethnicity, background, or other identifiers. During its first year of service, FBS delivered 20,000 hot meals to 85 seniors. Today the agency serves more 405,200 meals to over 2,300 seniors annually in a service area of 1,000 square miles; and in October of 2023, served its 7 millionth meal.
