Make mammograms part of your wellness routine.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s an important reminder of how essential mammograms are in protecting women’s health. Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women, with one in eight women in the U.S. expected to face a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Many of those diagnosed do not have a family history of the disease—that’s why routine screenings matter for every woman, not just those with known risk factors.
Why Mammograms Matter
Mammograms are the most effective tool for early detection of breast cancer. In fact, mammography is the only screening test proven to reduce breast cancer deaths, helping lower U.S. breast cancer mortality rates by nearly 40% since 1990. Detecting breast cancer early often means the disease is found before it can be felt, giving women more treatment options as well as a higher likelihood of successful outcomes.
The American College of Radiology recommends annual screening mammograms for women beginning at age 40. Women with a higher risk due to family history or other factors, should consult their health care provider, who may recommend starting sooner.
Beyond scheduled screenings, women should stay aware of changes in their bodies. Women with symptoms like breast lumps, persistent pain, changes in the nipple or swelling under the arm should contact their health care provider to discuss whether further evaluation is needed.
Preparing for A Mammogram
It’s normal to feel a little anxious before a mammogram, especially if this is the first one. Preparing ahead of time can make the process more comfortable by:
- Trying to schedule the appointment one to two weeks after the woman’s period, when breasts are less tender
- Avoiding deodorant, lotions, powders or perfumes on the chest and underarms the day of the mammogram, as these can sometimes interfere with the images
- Wearing a two-piece outfit so only the top needs to be removed and a robe is provided to wear during the exam
- Leaving jewelry at home and tying long hair back for convenience
- Making sure to let the technologist know if the woman is breastfeeding, has implants or is experiencing breast concerns
Convenient Care, Close to Home
Scheduling a mammogram should never be a barrier to good health. With 18 Memorial Hermann Imaging and Breast Care Center locations across Houston, it’s easy to find a location near home or work. Many centers also offer early morning and evening appointments, along with 3D mammography for more detailed imaging.
Prioritizing women’s health is one of the best gifts women can give themselves—and their loved ones. Whether scheduled during Breast Cancer Awareness Month or another month, encourage all the women in your life to make annual mammograms part of their wellness routine.
