What year was Houston Methodist founded? 

Houston Methodist was founded in 1919. In March 1998, Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital opened with 22 beds and 160 employees as the first community hospital in the system. In 2024, Houston Methodist Sugar Land has 350 beds and 2,900 employees.

Houston Methodist comprises a leading academic medical center in the Texas Medical Center and six community hospitals serving the Greater Houston area. Recognizing our dedication to excellence, U.S. News & World Report named Houston Methodist Sugar Land as the No. 6 hospital in Houston and the No. 9 hospital in Texas. Houston Methodist Sugar Land was also recognized for 14 types of care, including four high-performing specialties: gastroenterology & GI surgery, geriatrics, orthopedics and pulmonology & lung surgery. In addition, the hospital was highlighted for 10 high-performing procedures and conditions: COPD; colon cancer surgery; heart attack; heart failure; kidney failure; knee replacement; leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma; pneumonia; prostate cancer surgery and stroke.

What inspires your work and what sets you apart?

Houston Methodist’s service extends beyond our hospital walls. This community commitment is demonstrated through the Office of Community Benefits. Community Benefits focuses on providing access to high quality, affordable health care services to indigent populations across Greater Houston while ensuring health equity for racial, ethnic and social minorities.


What's an interesting fact about Houston Methodist that most people don't know?

Houston Methodist offers funding opportunities through two grant programs, the Community Benefits Grant Program and the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Grant Program, focusing on the health priorities and social determinants outlined in the latest Community Health Needs Assessment. The Community Benefits Grant Program focuses on increasing access to health care for underserved communities and offers the Community Benefits Grant and the Mental Health Innovation Grant. The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Grant Program focuses on addressing social determinants of health within minority groups and offers the Social Equity Grant and the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Grant.


Has Houston Methodist won any awards or had any special recognition or acknowledgement?

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital was just named a top performer in the 2024 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership annual rankings from Vizient. Our hospital was ranked No. 4 out of 204 complex medical care centers nationally, marking our sixth consecutive year to earn recognition from Vizient.


What is your favorite part about being a member of the Chamber?

Our primary advantage of being part of the chamber is our ability to cultivate relationships within our expanding community. We actively engage with businesses and non-profits, and the chamber serves as the vital link that unites us all.
